Blog about Barbet Yatzie & Moët

My life with the French waterdogs Yatzie born 2007 and her daughter Moët born 2011. Barbets are purebred, active, relaxed and allergy friendly dogs with a soft and loving spirit. I am Swedish but live with my dogs in Holland. I hope you will enjoy the blog! Enlarge the photos by clicking on them.

Moët's puppies turned 6 this month and they are already almost as big as she is! Here she is, the proud mother, with Elvi (Merveille, left) and Amaro. They look so much like her, don't you think?

I can't imagine a happier Easter than with a house full of barbets!  Yeye and Elvi came to stay over for three days and Amaro came to visit on 2nd Easter day. What a joy! Taking them all for a walk was a great challenge. But with the help of MariAnne and Ton, Amaro's owners, it went well! They had a lot of fun in the waters together as you can see!

Vera (Peliyah) in Denmark went for her first cut - look what a nice, well dressed little girl she became!

A Facebook friend made this funny touch up of the two criminals... Luckily we can now even joke about what happened, since the adventure had such a positive ending. Life is getting back to normal here, and we have all rested well. But I am busy thinking about how I can prevent this from happening again, without having to let them out leashed for ever...

Yatzie and Moët ran off last night while I was letting them out, most probably after a rabbit. The Police found them along the high way A12 and took them in. We had been searching for hours with friends and darkness had fallen. Thank God that the Police were so alert! These criminals are very famous here in Holland now - this picture was all over the nieuws and this morning even on Local television. They slept in my arms through the night - after Bart had given them a necessary shower! I am still getting over the chock while so extremely thankful for the Angel that watched over them and for the Police that saw them and took care of them!

In the news

On the news this morning

Good friend from Den Hague visiting today with their two sweet labradors Luna and Fiep. We took a nice walk in Veldhuizen while the boys were watching a (boring!) football game...

Yatzie's toe is healing well. She was not allowed loose for two weeks and also not in the water. Through the day I kept a sock on and checked on her constantly and thought the night she wore a large protecting collar that prevented her from licking. The pulp now has a dry surface and she is allowed to walk without a shoe. But the nail is not really showing yet. That could of course take months. We are hoping it will grow back. Sometimes it does not. She got her spring costume and is very happy to feel so free again! See how the two best friends play happily!

After 5 days we visited our vet again for her to have a look at Yatzie's split, loose nail. It had been 5 painful days for Yatzie, she was on pain stillers, a split nail with a pulp that is partly in the open hurts... Yatzie's nail was by now less stuck to the skin and we decided to remove it. This is the first time I have to have a nail removed on one of my dogs. My vet explained that having a split nail partly stuck is like what a child experiences having a loose milk tooth. Once it is stilll hanging there it hurts but removing it, which hurts more for a few seconds, will make the pain less. Yatzie got a local anesthesia but still hurt a lot when the vet removed the nail. Poor thing. Now I will keep her pulp covered while we are out walking, clean it daily and leave it open in the nights, until the nail has grows fully out again. It will take some time so this is a difficult time for our dear Yatzie. I am not sure about that story about the milk tooth because of course the pulp is still extremely sensitive and will stay that way until the nail is grown out I am afraid.

Facebook nowadays share old memories with you and this week this one came up, a very happy day three years ago from Martini Dog Show in Groningen, when Moët won over her mother (who was placed second) and became Dutch Junior Champion! My sweet beautiful barbet girls!

You can read the old blog post and see more photos here: http://www.barbetyatzie.se/2013/03/02/moët-best-of-breed-and-youth-champion.-yatzie-got-the-res-cac!-15852875

Yesterday Yatzie was limping and screaming out loud when I touched her front paw - huuh, a split nail! Yatzie totally hates having her nails clipped so I sometimes wait for too long... When the nails grow long they can split if the dog runs into a stone or on hard surfaces. Yatzie had this a few times before, but then the split was short enough for me to just take care of it myself. This time the split was almost all the wat to the edge of the nail so I took her to the vet. She said let us wait for a few days, maybe the nail will fall off by itself. So we are waiting and I clean her paw in soda water. She now has less pain, partly due to pain killers. I leave her paw unwrapped, trusting my vet that this is the right thing to do.

Bink had his first trim and look what a handsome gentleman he now appears like!

I received this lovely recent photo of Amaro. He looks so much like his mother -  who tells me his getting into puberty.... Anyone else having that issue amongst his siblings?
